“how did the fish get away?”
Fish
Dancing proudly on a very windy day beside the fish cleaning stand on Point Roadknight beach.
‘Why am I a fish?’ was the question.
Made from biodegradable materials – yes I am.
Colourful – that’s me
Out of water – mmm, not for long I thought.
The wind blew.
The evening came.
The tide was high.
I got away and into the sea.
At sunrise, everyone began looking for me.
‘How did the fish get away?’ they asked.
Stories formed.
The word spread … I had reached Middles beach overnight.
I had become organic flotsam and jetsam on the beach.
I was rescued and taken home by a phantom artist … to be treasured.
As an artwork, I have expressed my ephemerality.
I now invite visitors to creatively express theirs through stories about how I got away.
I would love to see them on Anglesea Life Facebook or @anglesephantoms Instagram.
It seems I am a fish because I like fishy stories.
“how did the fish get away?”
a bit about - why am I a fish?
I am one of 11 phantom artists in Phantoms of the Heath.
In my practice I weave with ephemeral materials. I weave as though I am in a dance with threads of wet sloppy clay.
A trace emerges – from sometimes leading and sometimes following. My interest is in the connections and rhythms expressed within.
As I stand back, something familiar emerges. For me this weaving evolved into a fish. I wonder why? What do you see?
For me it’s a collection of stories. How I came to be gifted the sticks by a Point Roadknight artist during the Surf Coast Arts Trail. How I went with my mum to ask for some of the unprocessed white clay from a mine site outside of Ballarat. I was reminded of one of my favourite childhood stories - A Fish Out of Water. What was the message of that story I asked myself.
For me art is about the stories that emerge and I hope that this artwork and the other phantom artist artworks create many stories for you. Stories of searching for and discovering - art in unexpected local places.
